What is Dental Implant
A dental implant is basically a titanium post which is surgically inserted into the jawbone beneath the gum line to work as a tooth root. Post insertion, an implantologist will attach a crown on top of the implant to ensure the appearance of a natural tooth. Tooth Implants not only look and feel like your natural teeth but also function like them.
Dental implants are a popular and effective solution for replacing missing teeth, offering a long-term and natural-looking alternative to dentures and bridges.
Procedure for Getting a Dental Implant
The process of getting a dental implant typically involves several stages and can take some time, as it requires time for healing and bone integration.
-
Initial Consultation :
The dentist or oral surgeon evaluates the patient's oral health, takes dental X-rays, and creates a treatment plan. This may involve a thorough examination to assess the condition of the jawbone and gums.
-
Bone Grafting (if necessary) :
If the jawbone is not thick or dense enough to support an implant, a bone graft may be needed. This procedure adds bone material to the jaw to create a solid foundation for the implant.
-
Implant Placement :
Under local anesthesia or sedation, the dentist surgically places the implant fixture into the jawbone. The gum is then stitched over the implant.
-
Osseointegration :
This is the healing period during which the implant integrates with the jawbone, creating a strong bond. This process typically takes several months (usually 3 to 6 months).
-
Abutment Placement :
Once osseointegration is complete, the dentist places the abutment on the implant. Sometimes, this step can be done at the same time as implant placement.
-
Crown Placement :
After the gums have healed around the abutment, the final prosthetic tooth (crown) is placed. The crown is custom-made to fit the patient’s mouth and match their natural teeth.
